Right then, that’s all for the day from here in Bangi. The first game of the day between England and Nigeria was washed out, but thanks to the efforts of the ground staff, we managed to get play underway, even if it was just a 10-over contest, where South Africa emerged victorious. Looking ahead, we have got some exciting matches lined up for Sunday, 26th January. In the first game of the day, Sri Lanka will face Scotland, with the first ball set to be bowled at 2.30 am GMT. Later on, India will clash with Bangladesh, with the game kicking off at 6.30 am GMT. Don’t forget to tune in an hour early for the build-up. ADIOS! CHEERS!
South Africa's skipper Kayla Reyneke says that she is very proud of the girls. Adds that it was a collective effort from the team especially in terms of bowling in these conditions. Mentions that there is no secret or anything and it is about backing their strengths. Adds that they know what they are capable of. Tells us that it will be tough going forward but she is backing the team and they have good management in the dressing room. Says that they will all regroup and see their strategies and what they need to focus on more. At last, she thanks the ground staff for making the outfield playable despite the rain.
The Irish captain Niamh MacNulty says that their batting performance was disappointing but they still backed themselves to defend. Mentions that anything can happen in this format of the game and so they went out to do everything that they could. Adds that they come from a country with a lot of rain so they knew what to expect here. Further mentions that they have the ability to bounce back and will look to take positives from the game.
Monalisa Legodi is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for her impressive figures of 4/4 from 2 overs. She says that she took advantage of the conditions and swung the ball. Adds that she discusses with her captain on the field and it has been great to be a part of this team. Mentions that she loves her team and they support each other which makes this team special.
Time for the presentation ceremony...
Earlier, rain in the lead-up to the game and the resulting damp outfield meant a delayed start. However, we managed to squeeze in a 10-over contest, with Ireland opting to bat first. The situation demanded an aggressive start, but South Africa came out firing from ball one, and they never allowed the Irish batters to gain any momentum. Monalisa Legodi starred with the ball with figures of 4 for 4 from her 2 overs while captain Kayla Reyneke also made an impact with the ball with three wickets.
South Africa kickstart their Super Six campaign with a convincing win! Despite the lengthy delay, it didn’t take them long to switch on, and once they did, they showed their class. As for Ireland, with only 35 runs to defend, it was a matter of what they could achieve with the ball. Jennifer Jackson did manage to strike early with a couple of wickets, but the chase was never really in doubt for South Africa. Captain Kayla Reyneke ensured she batted through and guided her side over the line to a comfortable victory.
